I came back from a weekend long motivational speaking conference to find that fellow Yardbarker Brendan Haywood had posted a blog chastising Tiger Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, for her actions in this whole cheating saga. Brendan has called me a man hater for my previous blogs urging athletes to accept responsibility for their sexual behavior, and now, he’s blaming the wives. Gotta love it.
I have been trying to resist blogging on the whole Tiger fiasco because honestly, I think it’s ridiculous. I don’t care how “clean-cut” Tiger is; he’s still a super-star billionaire athlete. Why anyone is surprised that he had chicks on the side is beyond me. When I read the first story about him cheating, it was as if someone had called and told me it was cold outside: duh, of course it is – it’s December. Because his extra marital affairs weren't surprising (to me), out of the ordinary considering his position, or affecting his golf game in any way, I saw no reason to write about it. Then I read Brendan’s blog, Buy Me Love, talking about how Tiger’s wife is a gold-digger because of how she handled the situation, and I had to say something.
Brendan has a bigger problem with Elin wanting money to secure her and her children’s future, than he does with Tiger forsaking his vows to both his wife and God, and running all over the world with who knows how many women. Of course he throws in the obligatory, “what Tiger did was wrong,” but spends five paragraphs discussing the “faults” of Elin in this situation.
One favorite quote of mine from Brendan’s post is: “And if I was Tiger, the fact that it took mega-millions to keep Elin in this marriage would make me question her love for me, her motives and how committed she is to their family.”
This statement is freaking laughable. I’m sorry Brendan, but after publically humiliating his wife in front of the entire world by having repeated affairs (while she was pregnant no less!), Tiger has no room to question anyone’s love and/or commitment. Taking money doesn’t mean that she doesn’t/didn’t love him because it’s true that there’s a thin line between love and hate. After finding out Tiger was not only disrespecting her, but also risking HER LIFE by banging his mistresses raw, she’s justified to go after him any way she can. Obviously he doesn’t care about her enough, so it makes sense to go after something he does care about: his money and reputation. Plus, all Elin did was threaten to leave. If he didn’t want to pay the money, let her leave and get what she had coming in the original prenup.
Another favorite quote from Brendan’s post: “Another fact lost in all of this is that these affairs wouldn’t have even come to light if Elin hadn’t gotten all Jazmine Sullivan on Tiger and ‘busted the windows out his car!’ This could’ve been settled nice and quietly behind closed doors.”
Now I’ve never been married or cheated on (as far as I know), so I can only imagine how Elin is feeling right now. But I will say that if I was put in the same situation, I cannot promise my response would not involve breaking stuff.
And newsflash! It was already being reported on before the car incident. It’s not Elin’s fault it got out. Bottom line is that none of this would’ve happened if Tiger had kept his d*ck in his pants where it was supposed to be, and stuck to hitting golf balls instead of waitresses. See that’s the funny thing about being an adult. Actions have consequences. Yes, his wife could have handled it differently. But there would have been no need if the affairs hadn’t happened in the first place, which is undeniably his fault.
I am so sick of these men making excuses for what Tiger did. Ocho Cinco was also on UStream the other day rationalizing cheating by rich men. Don’t get me wrong; I understand how and why it happens. But you can’t blame the wives for it, or for how they react to it, short of killing someone. Maybe one day they’ll realize that things can get dangerous when you play with people’s emotions.
I agree that if Tiger and Elin are going to fix their marriage, money isn’t the main thing Elin needs to be worrying about. But after being betrayed and devastated in such a major way, I can’t fault her for looking out for herself monetarily in case it doesn’t work out, because obviously her man isn’t going to do it. After the bank, she needs to stop by the clinic and pray her HIV test comes up negative, since Tiger was doing porn stars and didn’t always feel the need to use condoms. SMH. Disgusting.
P.S. All the black people out there trying to make this about race need to stop it. There are just as many black women that will sleep with a married man and/or take their cheating husbands money as there are white women. Quit calling this a racial issue because it will undermine the credibility of the argument next time something really is about race. Plus, lets be honest here. Tiger won't even call himself black. Did you really expect him to end up with a black woman? Ya um, that was never going to happen. So get over it! Lol.
