Ugly, Manly, WNBA Players

Ok so, I was on mediatakeout.com yesterday, and there was a post saying that one of my really good friends in the league looks like a man on the court. Now I'm not even gonna complain about the fact that male athletes rarely get judged negatively based on their physical appearance (even though its true). I realize that, fair or not, we as women are held to a different standard in terms of appearance; and I'm ok with that. I will however argue that many of us are at least as attractive, if not more attractive, than your average woman.

Lets say you were walking down the street and selected 10 women at random. Take their make-up off, put their hair up, dress them in a baggy, unflattering uniform, and make them sweat for two hours. Then see how hot they look. My guess is that you'll have a couple cute ones, some relatively average ones, and probably one or two that are flat out unattractive. Of course they are gonna look better when they are all "put together". And the same can be said for us female ballers. The only difference is that our job puts us in front of everyone all sweaty and gross, all the time.

Trust me when I say the guys that say WNBA players are ugly or manly are the first ones to try and holla when they see us dressed up and out in the club. So that said, here is a picture tribute to just a few of the hot women in the WNBA.

  I think pro athlete women are some of the prettest women on the planet. I Love you all solid tone define physique. Tru stallions and I'm a big supporter of the WNBA. I wish there could be more pics and magazines of yall. I would love the opportunity to go out with one of yall but by you all being such Phenoms, the average joe blow does not have a chance. You all are tall and well tone so majority are looking for men their athletic campanion. Hey I'm just an average hard working brother so how about you hooking some of the blue collar brothers up Chantelle. I mean Male Pro Athletes go with regular no name women so what about the Ladies. Chantelle can we go out or can you hook me up at least a date with one of your WNBA Girls? That would be nice.

      Well that aint fair Chantelle Honey you are taller than the average man. So I'm at a disadvantage due to something that I can't help? I mean I can do something about my physique or just general mind related issues and compromising but a lot of times especially women in particular goes off of physical preference instead of good sincerity personality. Does not make a difference of your physical God giving stature, if you take care and represent yourself as a respectable individual then thats what should matter and I believe that is how you should determine on who you should get involved with.

      jab3147 ya you're right. it's more about who the person is. but at the same time, you like what you like. just like some men prefer blondes or brunettes, big boobs or butts, i prefer taller men. i'm not saying i would never date someone shorter than me (i have before). but i highly doubt that the man i end up with will be 5'8", bc thats just not my preference. call me superficial if you want.

    haha. ya, i caught that reference to the cup size too. i was like, ummmm. but as a female athlete we have to expect that. we are judged by different criteria than men. and i have learned to expect it. i would just appreciate the things that they say to be true. and calling us all ugly or manly is obviously not.

Great article, Chantelle. Really true. I agree with what you said... it's unfair. I mean, us as female ball players work just hard as the guys, and no one cares. And I have a lot of guy friends that are always on about how there are no hot girls in the WNBA. But you posted some great pics- especially that one of Mann. What guy isn't going to call that hot? but you're gorgeous too, of course.

You have a great point there, Chantelle. I'm in the military and I know that I am a stinky, ugly mess when I am done with field training or PT or something like that. To hold WNBA players (or any woman for that matter) to a higher standard is wrong. Men have gotten used to ooggling women and feeling like it's their right, but it's wrong. On behalf of chauvanist pigs, I apologize! :)

Im glad that I ran by this because I was having a conversation with some of my male co-workers about attending some Dream games this season because I really enjoyed watching you all play last season. Now there were two different sides.. some were like women are to soft.. they are to delicate.. they try to look to pretty while the other side says who wants to see women that look like men play basketball... so im like time out they are to soft yet they look like men??? There are alot of beautiful women in the WNBA and what people fail to realize is you all are out there to do one thing and one thing only... Ball. Off the court is a different story but I wanted to say you are very beautiful and I respect every woman In the WNBA getting her ball on.. defying men like the ones I work with. I even made a bet with them.. Im paying for five of them to go to you all first home game to show them how exciting the WNBA is. ....there are some dimes in wnba...and there are some that would be considered unattractive...but that's the same in any sport...there are attractive and unattractive people in the world...just gets magnified when you play a sport that is well publicized.

As far as women go, men will ALWAYS judge them by their looks, regardless whether it's right or wrong. Women have different standards and will quickly adjust to a man's looks, in relationship to their 1. Income 2. Intelligence, etc.
I like to watch the WNBA and think that at least 50% of them are at least what I would call attractive. Sweat, clothing and tied back hair notwithstanding. In fact, if the woman is pretty, sweat and heavy breathing makes them sexier as far as I'm concerned! But on the other hand, if they are unattractive, the sweat, etc makes them less appealing.
The thing that gets me is when they not only LOOK like men, but also ACT like men. The level of play is NOTon par with men (and probably never will be) and if I want to see MEN playing, then I'm going to turn to an NBA game and not subject myself to a bunch of obvious lesbians with manly tattoos and macho dispositions doing their man imitations. I appreciate the womens game for what it is. This is not an attack on lesbianism, but more a voice on my personal preference. Besides, the way some of them look, it's obvious that they could care less about what people like me think, and that's okay. But I would never support a team with a bunch of hard-assed looking women.

beauty is only skin deep....some of the women do look tough and they probably are tough and there's nothing wrong with that....most of the ladies looked lovely....i love females so it isn't an issue with me....to each it's own but what i would be more interested in, is could she turn up the heat in the moment...sounds chauvinistic but i did say i like the ladies

Damn, woman, you are fine. . . as are a number of other women in the W. Are you married? Seriously, though, I have a fifth grade daughter who is a baller - and stunningly good looking. She has long hair, green eyes, etc. and gets a lot of flack for looking so good while trying to hoop. It bothered her at first that people would tell her she can't ball that well 'cuz she's too good looking. I tell her there will be always be some insensitive, insecure or just stupid people. Thanks for being a role model that I can share with her!

Thank you so much!! I play high school soccer and I can't even say how many jokes I've heard about us being "butch" or that we act like guys even though there is not a single one of my teammates who comes close to that. I've even heard people talk about us being gay just for playing sports! The sad thing is that it's both guys and other girls who say things. I don't let it get to me because I know it's not true but thank you for sticking up for women athletes.
p.s. anybody who calls you and these other girls ugly and manly must be blind.

  ya, people are rude and insensitive. but that comes from a place of ignorance and insecurity. once you understand that, it's a lot easier to brush off negative comments like that. i'm glad you have learned that at such a young age but sorry you have had to. take all the lessons you learn from sports, including self-sufficiency and team work, apply them to your life, and do what makes you feel complete. don't worry about what others say bc if they're worried about you then they're not focused on themselves. thanks for your comment! =)

I am a Captain in the Marines and I had the privilege of being on the practice squad against the Vanderbilt Women's B-Ball team for four years. I have to say those girls are the hottest girls around. I had the opportunity to truly see who they were. They were never ashamed of it. The girls gave us holy hell during practice - sweating, bleeding, injured and we were on the receiving end of it too. Plenty of now Marine and Naval Officers got clocked hard by women and we respected them. Unfortunately the world has become very superficial expecting women to be "done up" all the time. I personally know Chantelle and other basketball players - next to my 6 foot wife, they are the most beautiful girls around and always will be.

I like women who are tough. My neighborhood is tough. If your not tuff you simply wont make it in this environment. Weak anybody or anything doesnt make it here in Detroit. So strong, athletic women of exceptional intelligence, will and courage are what me & my crew are attracted to. The men who say these mean spirited words are weak and insecure of their own masculinity. To me Queen Latifah is one of the most beautiful women on the planet. I have to admit women in sports have come a long way. Not only have they became better athletes but they are much better looking than ever before. Back in the 80's you must admit there were a lot of women that looked like guys in the basketball world. maybe because so many women basketball players became concerned with looking good as well as playing like a star. I'm sure if I looked hard I could find just as many manly or ugly women in the wnba or college as I could attractive ones. I just wish when I was playing football in college the women basketball players looked half as good as they do now

I think that most men have an inherent dislike, phobia, distrust of butch women. It's cultural and societal. I've played pick-up basketball with and against some women and it's always the "macho" butch's who will play rougher, dirtier and harder than even the average guy! It's like "overkill", like slow down, dudette... you're doing waaay to much! I think they are over compensating to prove that they are as good a player as the guys. But eventually, they wind up walking off the court, whipped and broke-off because try as they might, they never match the men in terms of what it takes to hold down a b-ball court.
Visual perception is REAL. That's why we have eyes! It takes a further, greater interest to make a person investigate and learn what's behind the visual, good or bad.

jamila wideman was a fantastic point guard who played at stanford back in they - played with Folkl, Nygaard, Scott and Starbird on some great teams that put together final four runs from 95 to 97. she played the inagural season with the LA sparks and also with portland and cleveland. i think she's a lawyer in nyc now...

Chantelle, what do you think about WNBA uniforms? Ive watched many games as an ex-WNBA beat writer, and am always finding myself defending the physical attractiveness of the girls to my friends. The current outfits are just so unflattering. I don't mean playing in a bikini or even the Australian team's outfits. But how 'bout shorter shorts (ala women's soccer) and "wife beater" tank tops? I agree with many earlier posters about "butch" women. Honestly, I think the WNBA would attract more mainstream attention if the players looked more mainstream (i.e., women who looked like women). And that's nothing to be ashamed of.

    Chantelle, why would you want the uni's to be more flattering? I admire you, but you are not helping the league by agreeing with the ideas like Chris's that women need to look even more like women then you already do to draw in more crowds. From what I read the majority of the people staying away from the WNBA is because they like the showboating of the men's league, and nothing but a dozen more Britney Griners will get them to buy tickets, they just don't appreciate a good ball game unless someone dunks every other bucket, and if you all think that shortening the shorts, or putting tank tops on you all then you all really don't know your fans. Let's face it most of the people who watch college and pro women's basketball know that there are some beautiful women out there. I believe most of the people making these comments don't watch women's sports at all. One night a few years ago I saw the Sacrament WNBA team out and there were some beautiful sistas there. There will always be ugly people out there but women's sports isn't the manly looking world it used to be

Oh yeah there are some sexy sexy women in the WNBA. I'ma man so I love women. I watch the college and WNBA and I've seen alot of fine women. It makes me sick when not only some men but WOMEN be calling lot of the WNBA girls manly looking and all. The article in MTO, I was offended by it. I seen Shyra Ely before when she was in Tennessee. Outside of the Basketball gear and every when she got dress up to go out she was looking tasty as WOOOOOOO. Swin Cash so many of them girls are so damn fine. I think it sexy to see women sweating in their gear,............ day dreaming ........................................... I'm sorry. I was thinking about Nikki McCray and Dawn Staley just now. WOOW.

I think there are many beautiful and sexy WNBA ballers as well as other female athletes and you Chantelle are one of them.....there are not that many "manly" players most seem "girly"(feminine) to me...even in the heat of competition...manly compared to what...little girls? What is NOT sexy about watching Allyson Felix or Gail Devers sprint down the lane or Serena smashing a ball (complete with scream and holla...lol)...besides it's sports not a beauty contest...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...peace and God bless....

I was glad to read your comments. I am going to share your blog with my teenage daughter. She has been teased by some ignorants classmates because they think the sport is not lady like. My daughter has proven that she can be tough on the courts and can be stylish off the courts. When she walked into a sweet 16 party with her party dress, high heels and bouncy hair they were all in shock. Like you said let them put on their sweats, pin their hair and run around sweaty. My daughter 's natural beauty will still beat them by a mile.

I think you,Candace Parker,Deanna Nolan,Becky Hammon,Katie Douglas,Swin Cash and Candice Dupree are beautiful,in my opinion.I also find a few "average" looking wnba players attractive too...they got a nice lil swag,lol.

I don't like straight players in the WNBA because they flaunt and stay within their race. Its hard to be like Anna Kournikova because basketball is a team game. I always believed that if you put 5 women on the court enough talent to play but lose like Anna, fans will come big time. I remember the Atlanta Dream in the expansion year, they lost 30 games but fans came. This year, they went to playoffs and the fans left.

Thanks for writing the blog, Chantelle. I never thought about "looks" of the women in the WNBA... I just love the game. But, having seen some of the pictures you've posted (especially the one of yourself), I am amazed at how beautiful the women are that I've been watching all these years.
