Our friends in the gold wrapper...

A couple days ago I was watching an ESPN story on professional athletes fathering children out of wedlock. Their “star subject” was a former NFL player that had – wait for it – 9 children by 8 different women! Uh, ya, about that. Are you freakin kidding me!?! Wouldn’t you think that after child 3, 4, or even 5, you might CONSIDER wearing a condom? And I know this is an extreme case, but it does happen, and it got me thinking...

Now I completely understand the allure of sex, and the frequency with which professional athletes are able to get it. In fact, if I was a male athlete, I’d probably be a ho too. Have you seen the women that literally throw themselves at these guys? I mean, some of them are so hot I’d wanna take them home - I’m sure my boyfriend wouldn’t mind but we’re not going there. I’m not gonna argue that all these men should be in monogamous relationships – that’s too idealistic even for me, and afterall, that’s what they made Magnums for. But what I don’t understand is why, when these men have so much to lose, are they so willing to have unprotected sex on the regular.

And the answer is: NO CONSEQUENCES. When they have a baby, they don’t lose pay or have to take time off of work, their lifestyle is altered very little, if at all, their bodies still look AMAZING, and society worships them no matter what they do. You would think the cost of all those kids would be a deterrent – the man in the story was paying $17,000 a month in child support – but when you’re a multi-millionaire and spend money like it falls out of the sky directly into your hands, even that doesn’t matter.

As a female athlete I could never make a habit of having recreational, unprotected sex without concern of seriously altering my life. For every “oops, it wasn’t planned but now I’m going to handle it responsibly” in the WNBA, there are hundreds of female athletes that take the precautions necessary to protect themselves. Maybe they don’t want to lose a year of college, or won’t have a WNBA team counting the days until their return. Whatever the reason is, we do what we have to do.

I know all the arguments in favor of the men: the women pursue and trap them, she said she was on the pill, boys will be boys, etc. And these are all valid. All I’m saying is, “to whom much is given, much is required.” If you are going to have a girlfriend in every city you play in, at least be responsible and protect yourself. Because in all honesty, these men should be praying they end up with a baby rather than something that burns, itches, or doesn’t move out of the house 18 yrs later.

  I suspect part of it is caused by a massive sense of entitlement - "Look how I beat the odds and became a star. I'm blessed by God/fate. Therefore, I do not have to think about consequences. " But these guys will not be making multimillion-dollar paydays forever - the time of a pro athlete is at best a couple of decades. Then how is that guy going to pay $17 K in child support?

      I think you might be giving too much credit for any "thinking" at all.... it doesn't matter if you're rich/athletic or what, a lot of men, when they get in the heat of the moment, lose all blood flow to their brain and fail to THINK at all. The reason we hear about the athletes having lots of kids is because they're the only ones sought-after enough to actually get so many women willing to take a chance with unprotected sex.... That's my theory anyway.

    i agree. when you are so young, rich, and powerful, it's like you rule the world. many of these men can do anything they want and that causes a feeling of (like u said) entitlement and invincibility. and about the guy paying $17 k a month in child support, he is now retired, not bring in the same kind of money, and is behind in his payments. he and his lawyer are trying to get the payments reduced.

  Sadly, I think a lot of this multiple children by multiple baby mama business is sometimes ego-driven. Men needing to feel significant so they leave "pieces" of themselves everywhere. What I really dont understand is: if you grew up without a father (as some of these men did), why would you then ensure that another generation of kids grow up in a single parent household? Or if they are lucky, with a dad that might make guest appearances in their life?

  It takes two...some of the ladies, and I use that term tongue in check, are sometimes on the prowl and trying to get pregnant in order to get those monthly checks, opportunity knocks....or knocked up!
  Of course like you said Chantelle after 3 or 4 times you'd think the guy would learn to cover up for safety :O

  i agree that the women have a lot to do with it too. Like people are quick to point out, it takes two. My point was that as a professional athlete you should know that, and being that you have more to lose than any woman strictly looking to have a kid by a famous man to get paid, you should be more inclined to take precautions. When two people get married, the richer one of the two has the other one sign a pre-nup because they have more to lose in a divorce. Same concept.

    And since there is no real consequence for getting some random chick pregnant they dont care, yeah they might have to pay some child support but there is no other consequence.
    
    I actually knew a girl coming up that her main goal in life was to get knocked up by a baller.... damn shame... I dont know if it ever happened or not, but there are definitely scandalous women out there for these dumbass guys who choose to not protect themselves.

  Chantelle, you are 100% right about the this. The fact of the matter is your behavior is dictated, for the most part, by the environment you grow up in. Sadly, the majority of athletes have come from poverty, broken homes or a combination of both. The only escape from that was sports, and the hope of one day becoming a professional and making tons of money and buy momma a new house. Trust me, I felt the same way when I was young, until someone told me that I could make something of myself if I got a good education and applied myself in school. That was the first time I ever heard those words and I guarantee you many athletes have never heard them either,
  Im not saying that striving to be a pro is a bad thing. Its just sad when the ONLY focus is that and total disregard for everything else. College didnt just provide me with a career, it taught me how to act like a man, be responsible for myself and treat others with respect. I never got taught that from home because my parents both had to work 2 jobs just to pay the bills, and grade school was a joke.
  It is easy to point the finger and say these athletes are idiots, and i agree that they are. However, the question should be why are they the way they are? The answer in most cases is simply that they dont know any better and when you are rich in this society, no one is going to offer you any advice or contructive criticism.
  The reason Travis Henry continues to have unprotected sex is simply because he has never faced a consequence hard enough to rock his world and make him reconsider what he's doing. Its just business as usual.
  In my mind, people who eat fast food or smoke or (add your bad habit here) are setting themselves up for major health risks when they are older. Why dont we stop? Because it hasnt rocked our world yet. If you had a heart attack tomorrow and your doctor said it was cuz of fast food I guarantee you that you would at least reflect a little about your life choices. Until then, you and I are just like Travis Henry.
  I agree that we should use peoples experiences as examples of what/what not to do, but let's stop pointing fingers at the people who do these stupid things, cuz at the end of the day, we all do something similarly stupid to Travis Henry in our own lives. Hopefully it just isnt as serious a mistake...

    you are 100% right. we all have our vices. and hopefully, how you endanger yourself is relatively mild compared to the other things out there. where i have a problem is that having these kids doesn't just hurt the men and women that choose to put themselves at risk. it hurts the kids, an innocent party is hurt from the day they are brought into the world. i am not saying we should all stop having sex. that would be hypocritical at best and absolutely impossible at worst. i don't care if they want to sleep with a different woman every night bc thats their choice. do what you do. but then you better own stock in trojan! for the rest of us, it would be great if we could all stop doing the things to hurt ourselves (and those that care about us). but until that happens, go in a room, close the door, and smoke by yourself. lol.

  If you notice the ones that seem to be acting this way probably should have never graduated high school or even grammar school. They got by on talent not brains. Wait until the money runs out because it always does and in 12 years there will be some special on the players with the attitude " oh poor me I'm broke". Thats when they'll learn hopefully.

  For a second I thought that this article might reference Demetrius Bell, Karl Malone's forgotten son. It's pretty terrible that Malone being such an icon and a "good guy" on the basketball court and with the media can completely overshadow something as selfish as never even acknowledging the existence of his child.

    I've actually also met his daughter...who didn't know that she was. She looked just like him and was a basketball star in high school at the time, but she didn't even know she was related to him. A friend of her mom's told me. Craziness.

I read your opinion and yes, you make a very valid point "to whom much is given, much is required" and in no way do I agree with dudes becoming serial baby's daddy's (i.e. random kids from random women in various places) but come oooooooon, what about the woman!! Women are just as much to blame as are the men who get away with this type of behavior. They know the guys have 10 or 12 kids, and still they accept them with very little reproach. There's a lot to be said for a woman who WILLINGLY gets it in RAW (i.e. absent our friend in the golden wrapper) with a dude whom she knows has random kids all over the place. I mean seriously, couldn't the same be said for the women "to whom much is given, much is required"? I mean, isn't her body a temple, so shouldn't she be required to treat it as such? Maybe if ur fellow sisters didn't accept men being trifling then situations like this would cease to exist. - Oh, I forgot to mention...... a lot of women leave their standards by the wayside when it comes to pro athletes. It's a well known fact that jerseys drop drawers like credit scores in the recession... women (not all) see dollar signs and are will to risk anything just to become baby's mama #13 and get that 18yr meal ticket. I have a feeling you girls would be singing a whole different tune if the shoe were on the other foot, and men were running around trying to trap you guys.

    i totally agree that some of these women are scandalous. and yes, standards often go out the door in the face of millions. but how smart do you have to be to know that those kinds of women are out there and act accordingly? these men go out to the clubs poppin bottles and flaunting gaudy diamond encrusted jewelry and then act surprised when people only see them/want them for their money. the other option is to approach women based on who they are and not how much jewelry they have on or what car they're driving. but that would be too hard because they wouldn't get all the attention and they might actually work to get the panties to drop. yes, the women are responsible too. but these guys have to much to lose to continue to act recklessly.

  LOL....... Didn't you know? Gaudy, diamond encrusted jewelry and bottle poppin is a mandatory requirement for attracting thirsty women. My approach is always relative to the type of woman I want to attract and i'm sure its the same for other guys. I'm sure the gaudy chain wearing bottle popper isn't really that surprised when he finds out that his Clublove was on hanging around for VIP wristband (for her and her homegirls), free alcohol, and a shot at being baby's momma # 13 at the end of the night. Either way, the fact still remains; even after 10 or 12 kids, there are still women that are willing to sleep with them, so you can't really blame the guys (okay maybe you can for being irresponsible, but that's about it).
